Getting Ready For The Big Trip

Well, we have been busy planning this little jaunt across the globe for many months now aiming to have everything sorted well in advance. I’ve traipsed my way through Trip Advisor and Googled my fingers to the bone to get us onto tours, find good places to stay, study maps and generally try to plan things to perfection. But….

4 weeks out from our trip, Toby dived in for a last-minute, try-saving tackle in his rugby game, right on the full-time whistle, landing himself a very painful broken ankle! Bugger! There go all those cycling and walking tours. Oh well, what can we do?

In another little pre-travel twist, Toby’s doctor issued an order that the offending limb should require elevation for our long-haul flights to London. We investigated all our options, including postponing the trip entirely and paying for an additional Economy seat for his leg to rest on. Unfortunately, the extra seat in Economy wasn’t going to cut it for almost 24 hours of flying and to cancel our whole trip would cost us a small fortune in cancellation fees (on our money-saving non-refundable flights). In the end, it seemed our ONLY option was to upgrade Toby to a BUSINESS CLASS seat! Can you believe that!? Toby thinks all his Christmases have come at once. I’ve never, ever flown Business in my life! We appealed to the lovely folks at Emirates for some kind of compassionate discount or concession but alas we were hit with the exorbitant $5K to upgrade him with no discount whatsoever. That sucks doesn’t it?  There goes the spending money. I hope Toby has the flight of his life! While he’s up at the bar ordering himself a Coke, we may just have to sneak in for a quick spin in his little, luxurious flat-bed ensemble!
